Opening Weekend: NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse

Image result for ncaa lacrosse Opening weekend took place this past weekend and it came just in time! About a month ago we were treated to an exhibition game between Notre Dame and the US Men's National team, that was all fine and good and all... But it was an exhibition game between college athletes vs. professionals. Exciting but not competitive. This weekend was quite the opposite; 10 games played and none of them disappointed. We saw North Carolina's title defense start strong as they took down UMBC at home 17-6. The 'Heels drew first blood just 15 seconds into the contest and didn't look back. Going on to score seven more before the Retrievers from UMBC could get one on the board, which would ultimately be their only goal of the first half. The Tarheels closed out the first quarter with two more goals and slowed the pace down only registering two more goals in the second quarter, but holding UMBC scoreless; leading to a comfortable 12-1 halftime lead for the baby blues. Each team scored five goals in the second half; but unfortunately for UMBC, too little, too late. Another big game was the Battle between The Air Force Falcons and the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday afternoon in Durham, NC. The No. 7 ranked Blue Devils were heavy favorites over the 19th ranked Falcons, but the Falcons used their experience and took it to them! Not to make excuses for Duke, but they do have one of the youngest teams in division one. Which would probably explain how they lost despite winning the groundball battle 28-12 and faceoffs 16-5. This is the second straight year the Falcons flew into Durham and snuck away with a one goal victory. Does Air Force have Duke's number??? With the NFL season wrapping up, I couldn't be happier now that lacrosse is on, I love watching lacrosse, it's nonstop action and as a coach, I am always learning something new from the teams. It's like watching live film!
